Bitcoin Strategy: Bought $27.2 million Worth of Bitcoin Before the Crypto Market Crashes

Strategy, a company owned by Michael Saylor formerly known as MicroStrategy, appeared to rush into the market before the price of Bitcoin fell sharply last week. 

The buying move is considered to make the company miss the opportunity to buy at lower price levels when the crypto market is experiencing a major decline.

In an official statement released on Monday (13/10/2025), Strategy confirmed an additional purchase of 220 BTC worth US$27.2 million or around Rp450 billion at an average price of US$123,561 per coin during the period October 6-12. 

The proceeds from the sale of the company's preferred stock, including STRF, STRK, and STRD, resulted in a total funding of US$27.3 million.

The series of stock offerings became one of the main sources of financing for the company's Bitcoin accumulation strategy, reflecting Strategy's long-term practice of converting equity sales proceeds into digital assets.

With this latest acquisition, Strategy's total holdings now stand at 640,250 BTC, making it the world's largest publicly traded company with Bitcoin holdings alongside a number of other digital asset entities implementing a similar reserve model. 

The average accumulated price of the company since starting this strategy in 2020 was recorded at around US$74,000 per BTC.

A purchase decision that is considered less timely.

A number of analysts said the purchase decision was not made at the ideal time. Just two days after the transaction was completed, the Bitcoin price plummeted from a range of US$123,000 to US$104,000 on October 10, one of the biggest flash crashes in the history of the crypto market that triggered the liquidation of leveraged positions of more than US$19.29 billion or around Rp320 trillion in just a day.

The sharp fall was triggered by US President Donald Trump's announcement of a planned increase in import tariffs of up to 100% on goods of Chinese origin, in response to Beijing's policy of limiting exports of rare earth metals. The policy reignited fears of a trade war between the world's two largest economies.

At its lowest point, the price of Bitcoin fell almost 16% below the average purchase price. Even as the market begins to recover over the weekend, the company still has the potential to buy Bitcoin in the range of US$110,000–US$115,000, or about 7-10% cheaper than its last purchase price.
